Steps
to Developing a Wind Farm …
1)
Identify the Wind
Resource
With the most up to date GIS mapping software, we
are able to identify target areas. A more comprehensive
wind analysis will follow if the area looks favorable.
2)
Understand the Transmission
Picture
With the help of transmission specialists, we
usually have a good sense of the existing capacity
in an area, and we are constantly staying active
with new developments.
3) Secure
Lease Position
We have worked with both federal and private landowners
to enter into mutually beneficial wind leases.
4) Establish
Source of Capital
Here at Whirlwind, we have strong partnerships
to share the burden of the high up front costs
of a wind project.
5) Identify
an Off Taker for the Energy
We have been actively bidding our projects into
the Utility RFP’s and have initiated dialogue
with different utilities to secure the purchase
of our renewable energy.
6) Address
Siting Conditions
We work with different consulting agencies to
address all the challenges a project will face.
While every project takes on a life of its own,
we feel confident in our experiences to face these
challenges, and find creative solutions to the
different issues that arise.
7) Obtain
Necessary Permits
Depending on local ordinances, there are a variety
of different permits necessary in the construction
of a wind energy generating facility. Whirlwind
has over thirty years of combined experience in
the federal, state, and county permitting of energy
facilities, and we are actively going through
this process with our Sweetwater County facility.
8) Select
Turbines
Every wind regime is different, and with that,
so are the various different wind turbines. With
meteorological data collected, and permits secured,
we next select the wind turbine and generator
configuration that is going to optimize the wind
resource. We have access to a variety of different
models, and are well educated on the different
options available.
9) Construction
At this stage of the game, with permits in hand,
turbines selected, ppa negotiated, and interconnection
agreements ready to go, Whirlwind will move into
the year-long construction process. It is during
construction that surface disturbance is at a
maximum, but we do everything possible to minimize
this disruption, and we work very hard to return
the land to its original state.
